LEGO Innovation Club (for ages 5-10) - 2020 Fall Session
All-Star Learning Inc. - Proudly Canadian
This program will be delivered VIRTUALLY so students can join from the comfort of their homes.
During this fall, we will be preparing our LEGO Innovation Club members to participate in another FIRST LEGO League expo near the end of November. The theme for this year is "Playmakers" and we will be teaching our students to think of innovative ways to promote active play in everyday life. We will work as a team to learn about engineering concepts to invent or improve ways to help make this happen in our society. Our team will participate (either virtually or in-person) in an expo to celebrate our achievements sometime in November (pending date confirmation from local FIRST LEGO League organizers).
The pandemic has no doubt changed a lot of things in our society. As a result, we have carefully redesigned our LEGO Innovation Club to adapt to this new reality while adding extra values to this program.
First off, we have added these NEW features into our LEGO Innovation Club:
Each enrolled child will be provided with one personal LEGO set as a gift to keep at home for use during each class ($25 value)
The registration fee to attend the local expo in November will be included as part of the program fee ($25 value)
An extra 20 minutes will be added to the end of each regular 60-minute class to introduce children to coding.
A sibling from the same household will be welcomed to attend each class with the enrolled child. However, the sibling will not be able to attend the expo as an official registered member of our team.
At the same time, after careful consideration of the rapidly changing nature of the pandemic, we have decided to move our LEGO Innovation Club online and will offer it in a new and engaging virtual format. Here are some changes that we will be making in September:
Each weekly class will be conducted live via Google Meet (not pre-recorded).
Teachers will encourage and facilitate interactions between students virtually during class.
Work will be diligently divided between team members to allow virtual collaboration during class.
Each student will be given one personal LEGO set to keep at home for use during class.
While there are pros and cons of a virtual class, we believe that the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages given the possibility of a new COVID-19 wave. Here are some major advantages of attending each class from the comfort of your home:
Avoid the need for rigorous health and safety protocols/procedures required by the government for any public gathering (e.g. screening, social distancing during class, contact tracing, etc...).
Avoid the need for students to wear a mask during class (now required by local bylaw for commercial properties). We understand that it may not be natural for some young children to wear a mask for more than an hour.
Avoid the risk of COVID-19 exposure and transmission between children and/or their families.
Avoid the need to cancel/reschedule classes should there be a new wave of COVID-19.
Here are the highlights of this upcoming LEGO Innovation Club:
Date: September 12 to November 21 [total 10 classes + an expo on Nov 21 (to be confirmed)]
Meeting time: 10:40AM-12:00PM every Saturday [60 mins of LEGO + 20 mins of coding]
Location: Virtual Meeting via Google Meet
